Ryan Koski's Translation Portfolio

I was born and raised in a small town in Montana called Columbus. Growing up, I loved watching anime (Japanese cartoons) and reading manga (Japanese comic books), so when I was in 7^th grade, I decided I wanted to become a manga artist and work in Japan. I thought that if I was going to live in Japan, I was going to need to know how to speak Japanese. Although no one in my small town spoke Japanese, and dial-up internet meant that my learning resources were limited, I started teaching myself Japanese using any textbook that I was able to get my hands on. 

When I move on to high school and started taking German classes, I realized that I loved learning languages, and so my dream shifted from being an artist to being a Japanese translator / interpreter. I went on to major in Japanese when I was in college, studying abroad my junior year at Waseda University in the heart of Tokyo. 

I graduated in May 2019, and within a year, the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the world. During this time, I applied and was accepted to the JET program to teach English in Japan, and I moved to my hometown and worked in a local café until the boarders of Japan opened back up. 

From April 2022 to August of 2024, I worked and lived in Joso city, Ibaraki prefecture, teaching high school classes my first year and a half, then middle school my final year. During this time, I studied Japanese independently and was able to pass the N2 level of the Japanese Languages Proficiency Test. After completing my contract with JET, I moved to California in August of 2024 to pursue a master’s degree in Japanese-English translation, and here I am today!

私はアメリカのモンタナ州の「コロンバス」というちっちゃい町で生まれ育てです。子供の時に、ナルトやワンピースなど、アニメを見たり漫画をよんだりよくしました。絵をかくのが好きでしたから、中学校の一年生のときに将来に日本に引っ越して漫画家になる夢を持ってきました。私の町に日本語がおっしゃる方が一名ともいませんでしたし、田舎のインターネットの速さはとても遅かったですし、どの手に入れられた教科書でも独習しました。

高校生でドイツ語の授業を取って、この授業と前の独習をきっかけに、私の夢は漫画家になることから翻訳者になることにずれてきました。大学に進学して専攻は日本語で、2017年から2018年まで東京の中心の新宿区にある早稲田大学で留学しました。

2019年五月に卒業して、一年間の間に新型コロナウイルスが流行ってきました。そのとき、JETプログラムという日本で英語先生として働くプログラムに応募しました。日本国境はまた開くまでにはとりあえず実家に引っ越し戻って地元のカフェでしばらく働きました。

2022年四月中旬にやっと茨城県常総(じょうそう)市に引っ越して英語先生の仕事を始めました。そのときにも、仕事の後で日本語を一人で勉強して2023年の12月に日本語能力試験のN2レベルを合格しました。JETの契約を完了した後で、ミドルベリー国際大学院に入学するためにカリフォニア州に来て、今はここに英和翻訳に専攻します。
